If you've dealt with acne at any point in your life, whether it be pubescent breakouts or adult acne in the form of hormonal acne or cystic, then you also know the pain of finding a foundation that will cover breakouts and any scarring without looking cakey or compounding the problem. Finding the right foundation for acne-prone skin can be just as hard as figuring out the best skincare routine, so we researched the best foundations on the market to find ones made with proven skincare ingredients (like salicylic acid, known for its acne-fighting properties), as well as formula and price.
To make our picks, we relied on testing results and insights from our chemists in the Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty Lab, who have decades of experience testing cosmetics, including research on foundation for oily skin and foundation for dry skin. Our editors also researched top-selling products on the market and consulted with dermatologists and makeup artists.
The majority of the picks on this list offer full, medium or buildable coverage, but there are also a few light coverage foundations if you are looking for a daytime option during warmer months. You'll find a foundation that's right for your acne-prone skin whether you also have oily skin or dry skin, and whether you want full-coverage face base, a lightweight CC cream that color corrects or something in between. And if you are looking for more products geared towards acne-prone skin, check out our round-up of the best acne products.

Best Overall Foundation for Acne-Prone Skin
Clinique Acne Solutions Liquid Makeup Foundation
Clinique has been around for decades and its line of foundations has only continued to improve. "Unlike many that just work by covering bumps and redness, this foundation contains salicylic acid, which can help treat acne while also providing the coverage," says GH Senior Chemist Danusia Wnek.
Not only does this foundation, available in over a dozen shades, contain the holy grail acne-fighting skincare ingredient but it also feels lightweight on the skin. Wnek, who has acne-prone combination oily skin, reports a matte finish and medium coverage. While we wish more shades were available, a 4.5-star rating across 1,575 customer reviews on the Macy's website makes this a popular foundation that won't disappoint.

Coverage can be as light or heavy as you need it to be." However, reviewers do note that the pump makes it hard to get all of the foundation out from the bottom, thus leaving behind some unused product. What to look for when choosing a foundation for acne-prone skin
When shopping for your next foundation, keep in mind the following factors if you have acne-prone skin:
✔️ Acne-fighting actives: Salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide and sulfur are the only approved actives to treat acne, emphasizes Wnek, so foundations without these ingredients can only provide coverage. "The best formulas have salicylic acid to keep the pores clean and bacteria free throughout the day," explains celebrity makeup artist Tomy Rivero.
✔️ Ingredients: Consider foundations with mineral SPF to protect your skin as well as silicone free foundations as silicone's occlusive properties can clog pores and cause build up, explains Azadeh Shirazi, M.D., a board-certified dermatologist specializing in medical, surgical and cosmetic dermatology. Look for a lightweight foundation that is water-based and formulated with hyaluronic acid that can help keep your skin hydrated.
✔️ Formula: "Avoid heavy formulas, as they tend to cause buildup and congestion in pores," says Dr. Shirazi. "It’s best to look for non-comedogenic formulas, meaning those that don’t clog pores or contribute to oil production or irritation," but it's important to seek out foundations that have been tested for comedogenicity (or. pore-clogging potential) in a clinical setting under a dermatologist’s supervision, says Beauty Lab Executive Director Aral Birnur, Ph.D. A lot of products are labeled "non-comedogenic" but Birnur notes that the term is not not regulated by the FDA. When selecting products for the GH Seal, we confirm that such claims by brands are backed up with data. If you are considering a foundation that claims it is non-comedogenic, Aral recommends contacting the manufacturer's Customer Service to ask for validity of the claim. Large beauty companies and drugstore brands will typically have the data to confirm your inquiry, but the numbers may not always be there on the site.
✔️ Coverage: Foundations can offer a range of coverage from light to full, with some offering a buildable coverage that you can customize. Rivero recommends aiming for a light to medium coverage foundation that is buildable. We have included medium coverage options in this list as well as tinted moisturizers for a light coverage look that can still smooth out bumps and scars.
✔️ Type: Foundation can also vary by type, from powder to liquids and serums. Rivero recommends using a liquid or serum foundation rather than a cream foundation which is often oil-based. "If maximum coverage is what you are looking for I suggest always opting for a liquid base and set with a mineral powder for extra coverage if you’re trying to hide acne scars," adds Rivero.

Can foundation cause acne or breakouts?
Wearing foundation won't necessarily cause acne, if you are using a foundation formulated for acne-prone skin and excludes ingredients that can cause redness, dryness, irritation or breakouts. Dr. Shirazi explains that you don't want your foundation to disrupt your skin barrier. A disruption can lead to acne so you'll want to closely read ingredient labels and pay close attention to formula. If you are concerned, choose a foundation with salicylic acid which will help treat acne.
How to apply foundation to acne prone skin
If you are prone to breakouts, it's key to practice good facial hygiene, like cleansing with a face wash for acne and following up with a moisturizer for acne-prone skin.
Once your "canvas" is clean and ready to go, it's time to select the appropriate application tool. Rivero recommends cutting makeup wedges in two pieces and using a piece per application and tossing after. "This ensures no bacteria has transferred into your application preventing the speeding of acne-causing bacteria." If you don't have cystic acne, Rivero says a makeup brush "is also a great way to get the best coverage while keeping things sanitized." Just make sure to wash the brush daily after each use.
When your foundation is all set, you can go in with one of our best concealers. And at the end of the day, take off all of your makeup with a non-greasy makeup remover before heading to bed.
